One of those contractors was planning to install new support beams within a large concrete structure. They needed multiple surface areas scanned adding up to roughly 720 square feet that was located forty feet high and could only be accessed by scissor lift. They reached out to GPRS to scan the concrete to locate rebar, post tension cables and all unknown reinforcing steel.
GPRS worked together with the contractor and decided to use a specialty GSSI built scanner that is specifically designed to scan large concrete surfaces located in high places. The scope of the project lasted two full days of working on the lift. Once the scanning was complete the GPRS technician marked all findings on the surface with permanent marker and discussed the results with the engineer so they could determine how to layout the anchors to support the weight of the beams. The beams were successfully installed in the concrete structure without incident.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems in Chicago was contacted by a local environmental firm to scan an area to locate several underground storage tanks suspected to be remaining from a previous usage on the property. The reason GPR scans are used on areas like this is to provide a cost effective and a productive means to determine what is below the surface at the site. This information can then be used to help remediate and rehab the site for use today.
GPRS was able to locate the suspected underground tanks along with several utilities and pipes that were associated with the UST’s in question.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Southern California was contacted by an electrical company to scan for rebar in a parking garage prior to coring (10) 2” holes for new electrical vehicle chargers. We scanned 2’x2’ areas for all locations and we marked all findings on the surface with keel. In the areas scanned, we found that the slab was roughly 12” thick and consisted of 2 layers of rebar at 12” on center.

Prior to core drilling concrete elevated slabs, it’s imperative to determine what is embedded in the slab. In many instances during construction of buildings, conduits & other utilities will be placed in the actual pour of the concrete floor. In some cases, the structural integrity of a building could be compromised if any reinforcing steel is cut. Knowing the pattern of reinforcing steel is extremely important in those cases.
For this project a general contractor had to core drill multiple holes in numerous areas throughout a college dormitory in Ann Arbor, MI which was being updated. They needed to identify any existing utilities and the location of any reinforcing steel that was embedded in the concrete. The contractor couldn’t afford to have any existing utilities or reinforcing steel compromised during the process.
GPRS for the Ann Arbor & Detroit market was contacted to conduct a GPR investigation of the floor to locate any utilities & reinforcing steel prior to the core drilling being conducted. GPRS was able to scan the different areas with a 1600 MHz high resolution antenna & determine if any live power was passing through using the RD8000 (Radio Detection Device). They marked the paths of existing conduits & reinforcing steel passing through the proposed areas directly on the surface and communicated all findings with the contractor to ensure understanding of the markings.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Omaha, Nebraska was contracted to locate utilities and tension cables in a concrete slab prior to core drilling. Upon arriving at the site it was evident that the previously hired GPR company’s technician (green paint lines) needed more training, and had inaccurately marked several PT cables as well as a conduit. Thanks to the high standards of training GPRS requires, Jonathan Deputy was able to accurately map the rebar, conduit, and tension cable in the remaining areas (marked with black). The company was able to core drill with no incidents, keeping the jobsite safe and on time.

A local engineering company was in the beginning stages of a remodeling project on the front lawn of the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, TN. They recently contacted GPRS to help locate utilities prior to installing ground monitoring points. Grid scans with the 400 MHz ground penetrating radar antenna were performed to locate all potential utilities within the proposed areas. GPRS also utilizes a radio detection device which helps in locating live electrical power and communication lines. Ground penetrating radar is an accurate and effective way to help locate underground utility lines or any other material that may be underground.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of Virginia was utilized to detect underground storage tanks (UST’s) in Richmond, VA near the Richmond Squirrels Stadium. A property owner needed assistance in locating any UST’s for a client. They called Project Manager Josiah Donaldson of GPRS, Inc. to scan the property. Josiah verified the location and direction of any possible UST’s on site and was able to see what the client could not and verified the location of UST’s that had long since been forgotten underground.
