This GPR scan took place over a thirty-six-inch-thick concrete slab at a railroad fueling station in Temple, TX. The customer needed to identify the locations of the steel reinforcement running through the slab, so they could safely drill and install anchors in order to beef up the reinforcement.

We at Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. were recently called out to a sprawling jobsite in central Florida to locate existing utilities in advance of directional bore. Four separate borings were planned by our customer to run several electrical conduit lines throughout the property. Unlike laying new utilities in a trench, a directional bore drills through the ground with no visual confirmation of existing utilities that are being passed over or under by the bore. That is where GPRS comes in. Using both our 400MHz radar antenna and our RD8100 Radio detection wand, we scanned the entire area along the proposed route of the directional bores. These tools allow our technicians to determine both the location and the depth of any utilities the bore path might cross. Accurate depth detection is crucial for directional boring jobs, because it allows our customers to determine the depth of the bore at every point along their proposed path, allowing them to avoid hitting existing utilities.
On this particular job, the depth of existing utilities rose and fell constantly due to the uneven and constantly changing terrain. The versatility of the cart used to house our 400MHz antenna was well suited for this task. We were able to orient the radar over existing lines as mounds of dirt rose and fell along the scope of the scan. Being able to pinpoint these depths gave our customer the information needed to plan their directional borings. The path including the sloping terrain mentioned above, as well as multiple street crossings, including an intersection. Street lighting, water lines, sanitary lines, communication lines, and gas lines were all found and marked per the customer’s request. Utilities that were expected, as well as some that were completely unanticipated were located and mapped. The sheer number of existing utilities under the property were a testament to the value of quality GPR work in such situations.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. (GPRS) was contacted to perform a GPR survey at a high-rise building in Atlanta, GA. GPRS was asked to determine the location of reinforcing, conduits, or any other potential obstructions prior to core drilling in multiple locations.
Ryan Abueg was the technician from GPRS that arrived onsite to complete this project. Prior to arriving on site, the locations had been laid out using the orange “X’s” that can be seen in the photos. Using the 1600MHz GPR antenna, any anomalies that were found were marked directly on the surface using a black marker. Once each location was surveyed, the findings were then explained to the contractor in order to develop a safe plan for the drilling.
The photos included depict the final markup of two of the areas of concern that were brought up by the contractor onsite. As mentioned before, the proposed core locations were laid out prior to GPRS arriving onsite. If these areas were cored before they were surveyed, there may have been serious damage done to the structure or lead to severe injury to the workers present. GPRS recommends that a GPR survey be performed prior to any cutting or drilling be performed.

At an apartment complex located on the Jersey Shore, a contractor contacted GPRS to locate and mark on the surface all possible utilities on the property. The purpose of the utility mark-out was to identify all possible gas lines, water lines, communication lines and live electric. The contractor wanted to avoid all of these obstacles, in order to ensure the safety for his crew when excavating. GPRS was clearly able to identify all subsurface utilities within the property by accurately using ground penetrating radar, which is a safe and effective method for locating utilities subsurface.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems was recently called by a general contractor to locate utilities for a project just outside First Energy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio. The scope of work was to locate any underground utilities for a new pole location that needed to be installed. By using GPR and Radio Detection, a gas line, electrical lighting conduit, and communication duct bank were located in the area of concern. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Southern California was contacted by an environmental company in order to scan for drains at a gas plant in Marina Del Rey. The purpose of the scan was for the environmental firm to evaluate the number of drains onsite and the sizes to then determine whether the facility needs to add or replace drains. Due to the heavy rainfall earlier this year, the current drains were not exceeding expectations of draining the rain water down the steep slopes to the street which caused several mud slides onsite. We were able to find most drains up to 4’ with GPR, and we also used our Duct hunter to run through deeper lines to then locate them with Radio Detection 7000+. All findings were marked on the surface with paint and flags.
