Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Southern California was contacted by a general contractor in order to locate utilities in multiple areas prior to installing a new sewer line. A trenching path totaling approximately 1,000 linear feet was scanned, and any utilities found in the area were marked on the surface with spray paint.

This GPR scan took place at a shopping center located in Austin, TX. The customer needed to determine the locations of the underground utilities prior to using directional boring to install a new communications line.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. (GPRS) was contacted to perform a GPR survey at a high rise building in Atlanta, GA. GPRS was asked to determine the location of reinforcing, conduits, or any other potential obstructions prior to core drilling in multiple locations.
Ryan Abueg was the technician from GPRS that arrived on site to complete this project. Prior to arriving on site, the locations had been laid out using the pink “X’s” that can be seen in the photos. Using the 1600MHz GPR antenna, any anomalies that were found were marked directly on the surface using a black marker. Once each location was surveyed, the findings were then explained to the contractor in order to develop a safe plan for the drilling.
The photos included depicts the final markup of two of the areas of concern that was brought up by the contractor onsite. As mentioned before, the proposed core locations were laid out prior to GPRS arriving on site. If these areas were cored before they were surveyed, there may have been serious damage done to the structure. GPRS recommends that a GPR survey be performed prior to any cutting or drilling be performed.
GPR is a safe alternative to a costly repair to conduits or post tension cables damaged by drilling. GPR emits no radiation and poses no health hazards. Any findings are marked in real time directly onto the surface with no processing time which allows the contractor to begin drilling immediately after a survey. GPR is frequently used to scan the ground to determine location of underground utilities and underground storage tanks as well. A lot of times in older schools, electricians placed conduits in the pour of the concrete. It’s always hard to know the actual paths of the conduits 20-30 years after. There is technology such as ground penetrating radar & radio detection that can help identify where the conduits were placed. It is always good practice to have the floors scanned prior to any saw cutting to ensure existing utilities don’t get compromised.
In this situation, a general contractor began to saw cut the floors without having GPR & radio detection utilized. Once they began the saw cutting, numerous conduits were struck immediately. GPRS of Michigan was contacted by the general contractor to investigate the concrete floors before saw cutting any further. Once notified of the situation, GPRS was able to mobilize to the site the following day. They used a high resolution concrete antenna along with a radio detection device to scan the rest of the proposed saw cutting areas. As you can see from the photos it was a great idea for the general contractor to contact GPRS to scan the floors going forward. Numerous conduits were marked directly on the surface with the depths provided. It would’ve have taken days to figure out the paths of where the conduits ran to if they were cut & had to be replaced. Plus, the school was still in session so there would’ve been some power knocked out that was feeding the classrooms. The GPRS technician walked the site contact around to ensure everyone was on the same page with what had been located. In the future the general contractor mentioned they will no longer saw cut without having the floors scanned prior.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Northern New Jersey was contacted by a general contractor to locate all pipes and live conduits within and under a slab on grade in order to install a new sanitary line within an educational hospital. The general contractor was planning on saw cutting the slab and digging down 3 feet in order to install a new sanitary line. To ensure safe cutting and digging, the client requested all pipes and conduits within 3’ to be located. The entire trenching area was scanned and any obstruction was located and marked out in real time. Multiple live conduits were located both embedded in the slab and under the slab within the trenching area. The contractor was able to cut shortly after the scanning was completed and the collaborative efforts and real time results helped keep the job on schedule.
