What happens when an elevator gets shut down on a 9-story building renovation? Put up a temporary elevator on the outside…Buck Hoist. But before the buck hoist can be installed, it must be anchored. Before it gets anchored, the concrete needs to be scanned to keep the structure and the buck hoist secure.
GPRS was called on to scan for the buck hoist anchors during a renovation of a dorm building at UNC Charlotte. The areas for the anchors were successfully scanned, and the anchors for the buck hoist were installed without touching any rebar.
To complete this job safely, the general contractor drilled holes in the corner of each room, so that any worker in the room could use a temporary concrete wedge anchor connected to a self-retracting lifeline (yo-yo). This made transitioning from room to room quick, efficient, and safe.
The equipment used to scan was the 2GHz Palm GPR antenna. This antenna provides high-resolution images at depths up to 12-15 inches, depending on concrete conditions. The smaller profile allows scanning in tighter spaces than normal GPR concrete antennas. The 4000 SIR unit was used to receive the radar signal and display the signal on its screen. This equipment along with the experience of GPRS project managers lead to accurate and helpful findings.
Upon completion of the job, a job summary report is sent giving information on the work that was done: site specific information, findings, equipment used, and advice for safely proceeding with the job.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Southern California was contacted by a solar company in order to scan for reinforcing or conduits prior to anchoring. The proposed anchors were to be imbedded 4” deep and are meant to hold down an electrical transformer and other electrical equipment. We scanned an approximate 10’x5’ area on a 12” thick slab that consisted of 2 layers of 12” on center rebar at depths of 2” and 8” deep. Among the other findings were 8 conduits at approximately 5”-6” deep; we marked these findings on the slab with red paint.

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems was contacted by a general contractor to locate the reinforcement inside the concrete foundation of an office building. The GC was getting pressured from the structural engineer to find out exactly how the reinforcement laid so they would cut as little as possible and therefore keeping as much of the structural integrity of the foundation as possible. The general contractor was attempting to drill two 18” holes through the foundation to push through piping for a new communications system inside the building. GPRS was able to come on site within 24hrs of the requested job and safely locate all of the reinforcement inside the concrete foundation despite the tight quarters inside the crawl space making it the shortest and smoothest path possible for the contractor to take.
Ground Penetrating Radar Systems used a GSSI 1600 MHz antenna for this application to locate the reinforcement. All findings were marked directly on the concrete at the customer’s request for easy interpretation. GPR was ideal for this application due to the active work site in the surrounding areas. GPR emits no radiation and is safe for others to work in the area near the scan location. There are no pictures taken but a continuous scan making it faster to read a larger area throughout a slab while also allowing for hourly work instead of a per hole job.
