When doing this type of locate, we need to utilize two types of scanners so that we can see what lies within the concrete and what lies beneath it. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems was contacted by an environmental company to locate underground utilities prior to 4 soil borings that were going to be drilled through a parking lot where an addition was planned to be added onto the hospital over the next 9 months. In a parking lot like the one shown below, the customer is concerned about striking site lighting, other unknown electrical, water lines, sewer lines, and unknown sprinkler lines. GPRS was able to come out and successfully locate exactly where the all the underground utilities were that would possibly be obstructing their drilling activities. The client understood that by having Ground Penetrating Radar Systems out to locate all subsurface utilities, they saved on time and money by preventing a line hit and repair. This was crucial for the project to remain on time and to officially get started.
Ground Penetrating Radar Systems used a 400 MHz antenna for this application and a Radio Detection (RD) device to detect electrical current deep in the soil. All findings were marked with SUE marking paint directly on the surface for easy interpretation by the customer. GPRS’ 400 MHz antenna was ideal because of its accurate deep penetration and the open clear area the technician had to work. GPRS, LLC of Miami Florida recently was contracted to scan concrete CMU block walls to confirm the location and presence of rebar and grout within the walls. As the shell contractor grouted the walls, some areas were not complete grouted due to site conditions at the time of the pouring/pumping. Instead of “hammer testing” the whole building to confirm the proper grout location GPRS was called in to scan each of the proposed grout locations to confirm the presence of slurry/concrete. Throughout each floor of the building, CMU walls were scanned and where voids were found they were painted with yellow spray paint.
Peterson Jean-Baptiste was the Project Manager completing the scans on site. Equipped with the GSSI Mini XT, he was able to quickly and efficiently move along the walls to scan for voids or rebar. In the image below you can see Peterson checking his work on a wall that he just completed scanning. Near the bottom of the wall you can see orange paint marks, which indicate the proposed grout locations. Additionally, the areas painted in yellow are the precise CMU cells that had not been grouted properly and needed to be revisited later to receive the proper amount of grout. Following the investigation, Peterson was able to communicate all the findings to the Project Manager for the general contractor on site in order to better make decisions on how to proceed moving forward. GPRS’s office in Phoenix, AZ. was hired by a client to locate utilities in the center of the airport prior to the install of a new concrete slab and bollards for a larger propane tank. This job was next to the radar building and had multiple lines running near the proposed area for the upgraded equipment. GPRS utilizes both Ground Penetrating Radar as well as your typical electromagnetic locating wand. The area scanned for the tank was roughly 50’x50’, just out front of the main radar building. It was very important to have us come out and locate the utilities since there were multiple utilities running near this area that nobody knew anything about. We were able to trace out all of the electrical and communication lines in the area to give the client options for where they wanted to install the new tank. Once all of the lines were identified, we were able to confirm the depths by using GPR to see the lines underground.
